The D Line Subway Extension provides downtown Los Angeles with exciting new transit capabilities ahead of the Olympics and the World Cup. B&C Transit Inc. designed, fabricated, tested, and integrated all new CCTV, public address, visual messaging, and monitoring and control systems for all three stations in just under 4 miles of dual-bore tunnel.
LA Metro’s D Line Subway Extension project takes the previously Purple Line west from the previous terminus at Wilshire/Western Station. In Phase 1 the dual-bore subway tunnel follows Wilshire Boulevard underneath Korea Town and the Miracle Mile to Beverly Hills. The new segment runs just under 4 miles and includes 3 new stations at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega. This new segment provides the foundation to continue the extension in Phases 2 and 3 through Beverly Hills and on to Century City and Westwood.

B&C Transit Inc. developed the sytem-level and detailed designs for all of the communications infrastructure across the new section including CCTV, public address, visual message signs, telephones (including monitored emergency phones), and system monitoring and control hardware. B&C Transit Inc. also provided gas detection and life safety systems as well as programmed emergency ventilation operation sequences to ensure gas and smoke mitigation. All told, the system deployed over 200 CCTV cameras, 60 visual message signs, 300 telephones, 300 hazardous gas monitoring sensors, and more than 8,000 individually monitored or controlled data points. Ensuring that all of those devices were fully interconnected with the LA Metro central systems while also fully individually accessible during emergency situations was a significant effort.
